Overview – best certification standards
DGNB Platin
Already three years before the opening, the building was awarded the pre-certificate of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB), an internationally acclaimed seal of approval, due to its above-average implementation of sustainability criteria. The RMCC was awarded the DGNB Platinum Certificate at the opening in 2018.
DGNB Diamant
The RMCC has been the delighted holder of the “DGNB Diamond Certificate for Excellent Design and Quality of Building Culture” since October 2018. Design and building culture are the critical aspects of holistic sustainability for the DGNB. The Diamond Certificate honours, amongst others, the facade design of the RheinMain CongressCenter with its linearity in the form of colonnades typical for Wiesbaden forming an interface to the city. The design ensures that the daylight inside the building can be used optimally.
DMK Award 2019
The RMCC was presented the DMK Award 2019 of the Dagmar + Matthias Krieger Foundation in 2019 for its sustainable construction.
The foundation pursues the goal of disseminating the topics of sustainability and future-oriented, environmentally conscious construction. This award for the RMCC reconfirms that the owner made the right decision to erect the building according to the latest sustainable design standards.
International prize FIABCI Prix d’ Excellence Special Prize Innovation / Energy
Every year, a large number of development projects from all over the country that are convincing in terms of sustainability, innovation, concepts in line with market requirements and first-class architecture are submitted.
In 2019, the RMCC received the FIABCI Prix d’ Excellence International.
Fairpflichtet – the sustainability code of the event industry
Compliance with the European Association of Event Centres (EVVC) / German Convention Bureau (GCB) sustainability code “fairpflichtet” is a matter of course for us, and with the ECOPROT award, the fundament was laid for the pan-European environmental management system EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) and ISO 14001, which are also our objectives.
CSR Regio.Net
CSR Regio.Net Wiesbaden provides companies from Wiesbaden, the Rheingau-Taunus district and Hochheim the opportunity to address the topic of “responsible corporate management” as part of a network and to work on systematically integrating social aspects in all areas of business operations. We took part in the CSR Regio.Net in 2022.
As a company, we involve all employees and partners in the continuous sustainability development process. We raise awareness and motivate ourselves both as a team and as individual employees to perform and be actively involved in sustainable management. We are committed to regular audits and the continuous optimisation of our business processes from an ecological, social and economic perspective, and provide incentives for rethinking and acting, and communicate the (environmental) strategies and goals of the company openly and regularly to all employees and partners.
Ökoprofit Wiesbaden
After successful participation in the environmental advisory programme “Ökoprofit Wiesbaden” (ECOlogical PROject for Integrated Environmental Technology) in 2021, the ecological optimisation of the business was honoured.
The RheinMain CongressCenter was certified as Wiesbaden Ökoprofit Business 2020/2021 on 15th November 2021.
The following environmental benefits and measures at the "RheinMain CongressCenter" location are in focus for the certificate in 2020/2021:
- Energy efficiency — electricity
- Mobility
The charts show that the RMCC meets set standards for sustainable venues and makes an important contribution to climate protection and resource conservation.
Sustainable business locations in Hesse
Award in the category "Particularly efficient energy systems, Outstanding design of the buildings and/or company grounds" from the Hessian Chamber of Industry and Commerce (HIHK).
Short description:
The RMCC is spacious, flooded with light and designed with a lot of wood, and is technologically state of the art. The building is ecologically outstanding and has already received several awards. Technical highlights are a heat pump with 285 kW thermal output in combination with a waste water heat exchanger and integrated refrigeration compression machine; works in dual mode with simultaneous heat/cold demand; photovoltaics (PV) of 250 kWp with a module surface of 1120 m²; feed into the building's own power grid; service water system (145 m³) with external cistern.
Entrepreneurial/economic value:
Monetary savings through PV, heat pump and rainwater cistern. The building was designed to fit perfectly into the urban environment and to correspond with the city's landmarks. Due to the adjacent green spaces and a public passageway and its open design, the building connects with the city and thus meets with great approval from the population.
Highest level of energy efficiency
The energy concept, which is unique to date, is based on three fundaments: the RMCC is heated through temperature-controlled floors by a heat pump that uses heat from the wastewater from the drain. The power supply for the peak loads is covered by district heating from the biomass heating plant, the primary energy of which will be zero in the future. The electricity required for this is generated by our own photovoltaic system on the roof of the large Halle Nord.
The result: the limits set forth in the German Energy Saving Regulation 2016 are undercut, thus documenting the high energy performance standard of the RMCC. Natural air conditioning, heat-retaining building materials and optimum use of daylight continue to characterise the building. Furthermore, energy-optimised windowpanes and facade surfaces were installed which can be easily shaded for events.
The use of natural building materials such as natural stone and wood in accordance with the certification requirements of the German Sustainable Building Council has been taken into consideration. As a renewable and local raw material, wood is CO2-neutral and creates a healthy indoor atmosphere, optimum air humidity and thus ensures a considerable feelgood factor – aspects that have a priority for us when visiting the building. Furthermore, wood is stable, versatile and has excellent insulation properties.
Efficiency and sustainability in the lighting design
With the goal of achieving platinum certification from the German Sustainable Building Council, the lighting was designed for high efficiency and sustainability. The building is fitted exclusively with LED lamps which have low energy and maintenance requirements and a long life.
Power consumption is further reduced through daylight and presence-dependent lighting control. The visitors to the RMCC are received in foyers flooded with daylight. The fully glazed facades allow plenty of daylight into the foyer and the halls during the day, which makes the course of the day clearly perceptible inside and also drastically reduces energy consumption and the total cost for event organisation.
Waste prevention and waste sorting
Whether during set-up, de-rig or during the event – waste prevention and waste sorting affects all our service providers, partners, employees and visitors / guests. Our environmental management concept thus covers a wide range of areas and is based on intensive communication with the affected stakeholders.
Central location and sustainable arrival
The central location of the RMCC enables visitors to reach conference hotels, shops and restaurants on foot as well as the extensive bus, regional and long-distance railway network. From Wiesbaden main train station, the RMCC can be reached in approx. five minutes on foot. Environmentally conscious arrival and departure is thus guaranteed for event organisers, visitors and employees.
In addition, the cooperation with Deutsche Bahn for booking “event tickets” and the possibility, as event organiser, to issue a combi-ticket from the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (transport association) for our own event in the RMCC contributes to improving the CO2 footprint, leaving private cars at home during an event that lasts several days and relieving the traffic situation.
The rental bicycles can also be used for fast, spontaneous mobility in the city. Deutsche Bahn and Visa offer rental bicycles for flexible use with "Call a Bike (Öffnet in einem neuen Tab)" and "Nextbike (Öffnet in einem neuen Tab)". These are located at the main train station. With the new e-scooter sharing Wies-e (Öffnet in einem neuen Tab), you reach your destination quickly, uncomplicatedly and in an environmentally friendly way.
